Cheaha State Park sits atop the highest point in Alabama at 2,407 feet above sea level. Surrounded by 392,567 acres of national forest, views from the park are breathtaking. With lodging, cabins, camping, swimming, and hiking; their plenty to do and see while visiting the park. Arriving late in the day, visit the CCC observation tower, climbing to the top for a spectacular view and then opting for the family-friendly Bald Rock trail. At a half mile long, you can choose to hike the wooded path or the accompanying boardwalk. Just watch for splinters if you’re a barefoot explorer or stick to the sandy, rocky path that also leads to the overlook.

He is always quick to point out even the smallest insect when we’re out for a walk. Gravel has to be the toughest terrain I’ve encountered while going barefoot. It is a great conversation starter, opening the opportunity to share about the #baresolesexplorer mission many times. And as crazy as it sounds, barefoot walking on stone has health benefits including lowering blood pressure and tension in the body which have been studied and published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. To toughen up your soles, start slow with short walks increasing time and distance as you feel more confident. Overtime, as I’ve found, your feet will become accustomed to the surface, adjusting your balance as needed.

Southern Asphalt. It can only be described as molten lava, especially only on an August summer afternoon. It often stands in the way, between your car and the cool shaded grass of the local park. Those who live where it's hot know there’s only one spot of relief - the white line. I love the summer time, but sometimes it’s just too hot!

Cathedral Caverns State Park, originally Bat Cave,

Cathedral Caverns State Park, originally Bat Cave, opened to the public in the 1950s. Purchased by the state in the late 1980s, the park reopened to visits in 2000. With a massive entrance, Goliath stalagmites and picturesque formations, a cave tour is a great way to cool off during the hottest part of summer. The concrete path inside is paved, however wet with numerous steep inclines. Opting for a less risky footwear choice than flip flops, bare feet provide natural gripping and footing awareness all for a safer tour experience. The cool concrete made for a pleasurable terrain on a hot day. Our family would highly recommend @cathedralcavernsstatepark if you find yourself in northern Alabama.

Yesterday morning we were the only ones at the playground. Our little one loves this playground because it has lots of stairs to climb and a big slide. I like it because it’s built into the forest; well shaded with lots of earthy surfaces and natural building materials to enjoy. And since it was empty, I played a little myself!

Touch-a-truck events get kids outdoors as well as up close and personal with vehicles used in many jobs and industries. From dump trucks, police cars, farm equipment, fire trucks, earth moves to cranes; events like these allow children to not only explore occupations in the community but also to climb, drive and honk the horn. Even as an adult, we had fun seeing the various large pieces of machinery; but our little one enjoyed it the most. Looking forward to the event again next spring @columbianamainstreet.

How many of you run short errands sans shoes? While I'd like to have bare feet all day every day, life does get in the way. Outside of work I strive to limit my time in shoes as much as possible and as a parent, I encourage my little one to do so as well. I'd encourage you to do the same.

If running shoeless in a store is not your thing, that's okay! Many enjoy the benefits of barefooting in nature. Grounding yourself has many positive health benefits.

If interested in giving a quick trip a try - next time you head out to grab a pizza; leave your shoes at home or in the car. Your time inside making your pickup will be short.

Flagg Mountain holds the distinction as being the

Flagg Mountain holds the distinction as being the southernmost peak of the Appalachian mountains standing over 1,000 ft tall. Atop the peak, a 52-ft high, hand constructed stone tower sits. Built in 1935 by the Civil Conservation Corp, visitors today can climb the wooden staircase for a 360-degress scenic view from within the 12-ft x 12-ft cab. Originally intended to be Weogufka State Park, the parks construction was halted due to the advent of World War II and has remained a State Forest. Hiking trails, cabins, and the tower are open to visitors. The 0.41-mi walk from the parking lot to the tower is worth the effort for the magnificant views.
